Our trip to San Diego started out with a day to just hang out by the pool. Tammy's sister Veronica and her daughter Cheyenna drove down to visit, as did Brandon's girlfriend Christie. We had a great time swimming and playing in the water.
On Monday we drove south to try to find the Mexican border. Our first stop was the town of Imperial Beach (because Tammy wanted to see where John from Cincinnati was filmed. A friendly Sheriff's deputy told us the motel was in a "bad area" so we skipped driving over to it. She also pointed us toward Border State Park, where the US - Mexican border can be seen.
Sophie and Dad hiked toward the border. It was quite inimpressive! The fences were pretty dilapidated and we could see a main Mexican highway right on the other side. Mexico even constructed a convenient pedestrian bridge over the highway, presumably to make it easier for people to sneak into the US. The Border Patrol kept up a constant stream of helicopter flyovers. As we got closer to the border, one buzzed us at about an altitude of 50 feet. We smiled and waved. I guess our photos are on file in Washington DC now!
As we drove back toward I-5 we saw the official border station in the distance. The huge Mexican flag was pretty hard to miss!
